Generally speaking most summer flowering bulbs need to be planted, dependent on variety, between March and May.

In borders aim to plant in groups of at least 5 as this will make a fantastic show at flowering time. Bulbs are also ideal for use in pots and container.

Planting Bulbs.

First you need to ascertain the correct depth to plant. This can easily be worked out by roughly measuring from the base of the bulb to the tip. The planting depth is double or treble this measurement (a 2 inch bulb would be planted at 4 to 6 inches deep). Plant the bulbs tip uppermost in a suitably sized hole and cover with soil. Spacing between bulbs should be at least twice their width. If planting in containers you can plant the bulbs a little closer if needed.

Caring for bulbs in containers.

Water bulbs regularly when they are actively growing taking care not to saturate the compost, a waterlogged container will cause the bulbs to rot. To promote good flowering next year feed bulbs with a high potassium fertiliser every one to two weeks. Reduce the frequency of watering and stop feeding when the foliage starts to die down. It is best to let the foliage die down naturally rather than remove it prematurely.
